‘Nadabrahma’ title to be conferred on nonagenarian Vainika
Mysore/Mysuru: Sri Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha is celebrating 66th anniversary tomorrow (Mar. 20) at 6 pm. It is also an endowment programme in memory of A.K. Gopala Rajan sponsored by fraternity of doctors and well-wishers. The programme will be held under the divine presence of Suttur Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji.
The Swamiji will honour Dr. R. Visweswaran with the title ‘Nadabrahma’ and a cash award in the name of ‘Gottuvadyam Narayana Iyengar Award for Musical Excellence’ instituted by Chitraveena N. Ravikiran.
It will be followed by a veena concert by Dr. Visweswaran. He will be accompanied by Tumkur B. Ravishankar on mridanga and Sharath Kaushik on ghata.
Veena Maestro Prof. R. Visweswaran, a nonagenarian Vainika, is a musician with a traditional classicism for more than seven decades. He is a vocalist and a vainika without a human guru. A world renowned Vainika-Vocalist-Musicologist-Composer-Thinker-Speaker and author of invaluable books and articles. Acclaimed in India and overseas for his highly individualistic style in the veena, all his own — “The vocal style in veena.” Vocal music is intrinsic to his veena and gayaki style of rendition is the chief characteristic of his renditions. He is known for his innovative and explorative approach to creation and expression in music.
Visweswaran’s lec-dems on music and musicology are highly respected as an education and is a regular feature in most of the music conferences and the electronic media, in India and overseas. Visweswaran is a musical composer with over a hundred and fifty compositions in Sanskrit, Telugu and Kannada to his credit, which are professionally acclaimed.
Many disciples of many nationalities carry Visweswaran’s legacy forward. Visweswaran served as a Professor of Music in the University of Mysore. He has bagged almost all prestigious awards and has authored many books on music which is appreciated globally.
