Most critics are biased: Lyricist Dr. Doddarangegowda

June 20, 2018

Mysuru: Maintaining that most critics are often biased in their analysis, veteran writer and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Doddarangegowda has blamed critics for building walls between personalities.

He was speaking after being felicitated at a programme organised by Hemaganga Kavya Balaga at the Institution of Engineers on JLB road here recently.

Recalling that the critical views that appeared in several newspapers on the songs scripted by him for the hit film ‘Parasangada Gendethimma’ had resulted in many people turning away from the movie, Dr. Doddarangegowda said that, however, after the film was released, its songs proved to be a super-hit with many of the cine-goers hailing the cinema as a good one.

Lashing out at some critics, who are prejudiced, he said that such critics have only been dividing the society, building walls between personalities and glass towers, where one cannot express his or her feelings.

Pointing out that a lyricist should work as a cultural ambassador, who binds societies and communities, he said that literature often explains our culture through different ways.

Noting that the job of a lyricist is not an easy one, he said that a good lyricist should find the most appropriate words while penning songs for films.

Observing that writing every song is a challenge, he suggested that budding lyricists should look at the original roots of our culture in order to come up with the best. Dr. Doddarangegowda further said that extensive study of literature had made him what he is now.

Writer Bherya Ramkumar delivered the keynote address. Social worker K. Raghuram and writer Jayappa Honnali too spoke. Art and culture patron A. Hemaganga presided. Writer Mahadeva Nayaka, Jnanodaya PU College Principal Srikanta Sharma and others were present.
