Sir,

After reading the tribute written by Justice M. F. Saldanha about Fr. Denis Noronha with love, admiration and respect, I was moved to express my appreciation and love for a great soul (Star of Mysore dated Aug. 10). In my case I have a special bond with Fr. Noronha. He is from my little known home town of Bantwal and also he speaks in my mother tongue Konkani. Not only these two things brought us together, but also our concern to improve standard of education.

Many things have been already written about Fr. Noronha. However, one important thing that has not been mentioned is that he gave no preference while giving admission based on religion.  In a society like ours where caste, community, religion are the factors which drive every decision, Fr. Noronha was a rare exception.

Usually in parochial schools, preference is given to children taking into consideration religion. However, Fr. Noronha did not follow this policy and that might have resulted in his “demotion.”
