Proactive measures required to conserve water

July 9, 2019

Sir,

A very timely and appropriate advice has been sent in the letter dated July 8 by a “concerned citizen” to use water judiciously. The correspondent has very aptly described the various ways in which water has been wasted by our fellow citizens.

It is high time the MCC, under which the water supply division works, mounted a vigorous campaign to conserve drinking water supplied through pipes as also the borewell water.

There appears to be a laxity of MCC in this matter. Just as it takes up Swachh Bharat Mission with some zeal, it should put all its efforts (human resources, bill boards with catchy slogans, hand bills, vigilance, penal action, compulsory fitments of ball/gate valves, rectifying all leakage points, etc) in preventing wastage of drinking water. In fact drinking water crisis is more severe in terms of its basic necessity compared to all other needs of society.

A number of campaigns and TV shows have also been airing the message several times everyday after the PM has stressed the importance of drinking water. But our misinformed/less informed citizens seem not to pay any heed to it. Bold pictures showing the future grim situations when the most severe water crisis is to be faced should be pasted all over the city on the lines similar to that of anti-smoking pictures.

In short, much more needs to be done to avert a major crisis on the life-saving matter — WATER, which is aptly called JEEVA Jala.
