Rare Procedure involving artificial heart valve performed at Cauvery Hospital

Mysore/Mysuru: The doctors at Cauvery Heart and Multi-Speciality Hospital at Siddarthanagar in city have successfully performed a rare and complicated procedure on a patient suffering from leakage in the artificial heart valve.

The patient, 54-year-old Umadevi had undergone aortic valve replacement in 2015 at Hyderabad and had developed a major leak in the bioprosthetic artificial valve a few months back.  As the patient’s condition rapidly worsened, she was advised to undergo repeat valve surgery which carried high risk to her life.  

The patient and her family members consulted Dr. J. Rajagopal, HoD and Chief Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Cauvery Heart and Multi-Speciality Hospital in city who advised an alternative method to plug the leakage with a novel device called AVP-2.  

The patient successfully underwent the procedure two weeks ago and has fully recovered.

Team of specialists consisting  Dr. Yathish, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist; Dr. Shridhar, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist; Dr. Vanitha, Clinical Cardiologist; Dr. Satwik, Senior                                                                   Consultant Cardiac Anaesthesiologist and Dr. S.C. Madhuprakash, Chief Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon and led by Dr. J. Rajagopal performed the two-hour surgery using a minimally invasive technique.  

Dr. Rajagopal stressed on the importance of regular follow-up after any cardiac surgery or stent implantation to detect such complications at early stages.

Dr. G.R. Chandrashekar, Chairman of Cauvery Heart and Multi-Speciality Hospital, said, “This is the first incident of a prosthetic valve dehiscence treated successfully by device in the city.”
