‘Super Mom’ Chaitra

October 1, 2020

Mysore/Mysuru: Housed in Rampura Elephant Camp at Bandipur, Kumki elephant Chaitra, who has participated in Dasara many times, grabbed the attention of every one and was called a ‘Super Mom’ for her role in comforting her baby, which was shown in yesterday’s webinar.

Chaitra, who participated as a Kumki elephant in 2018 ‘Jumboo Savari,’ did not participate in 2019 as she was pregnant. She was not selected for this year’s Dasara as she is taking care of her 8-month-old baby.

She is also called as the ‘Super Mom’ as she has given birth to 10 calves so far and has nursed them to perfection. She is mild in nature and listens to small children and women, according to Chaitra’s Mahout Mahadevu.

Earlier, Addl. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF – Wildlife Division) Subhash K. Melkhede provided information on Wildlife Protection Act and said that the Act was implemented for the conservation and protection of wildlife and to stop crimes.

Pointing out that the co-operation of public was very much needed to protect forests and stop crimes, the APCCF urged the public to inform the nearest Forest Office if they come across forest crimes and added that the Forest Department would not disclose the names of informers.

The Webinar Series, organised as part of ‘Wildlife Week,’ will conclude tomorrow (Oct. 2). Interested may log on to https://tinyurl.com/y3ml394a from 5.30 pm on Zoom App. Today, Veterinarian Dr. D.N. Nagaraj, will explain about Gajapayana and how Dasara elephants would be taken care at the Palace premises.
