October 8, 2020

Mysore/Mysuru: University of Mysore (UoM) is planning to convert the Varsity Guest House into Covid Care Centre as a precautionary measure in the wake of plans to resume the academic activities from Nov. 1.

At the Academic Council Meeting held here on Wednesday, Prof. G.Venkatesh Kumar, Dean, Science and Technology and Professor of Psychology, Department of Studies in Psychology, said around 8,000 students study in various Departments of the Varsity. Besides, there are 23 hostels in which hundreds of boys and girls stay. It was learnt that the University was making preparations to begin classes from Nov. 1.

In the interest of students and faculty, it was necessary to have Covid Care Centre in the campus as a safety measure, he said.

The UoM Guest House which is presently shut can be converted into a 10-bed Covid Care Centre at least till the situation improves, he said adding that an ambulance has to be stationed in the campus to attend to any emergency cases.

Agreeing with the proposal, Prof. G. Hemantha Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, UoM said, it was a good decision and promised to do it immediately. In fact, Deputy Commissioner Rohini Sindhuri has convened a meeting to step up vigilance in the campus following spike in Corona positive cases.

The Guest House in Manasagangothri campus will be temporarily converted into 10-bed Covid Care Centre and request the District Administration to post necessary health staff to treat patients. Efforts will be made to procure an ambulance under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, he said.
