House Tax: When will MCC streamline online payment system?

June 15, 2021

Sir,

About two days back I read in SOM about our new MCC Commissioner expressing the drop in revenue to MCC because of the drop in house tax collection.

I am a senior citizen and I have been paying the house tax regularly for so many years, every year by visiting the Corporation Zonal Office.

To tell you frankly this process of paying the house tax at the office is really a nuisance particularly for senior citizens. Firstly, there is no respect for the citizens and we are made to stand like culprits in front of the daily wage workers for getting the form filled up. No Officer will be present there.

After getting the form filled up we have to move from table to table for getting the signatures and we will have to wait for hours if the concerned person is not in the seat. Then we will have to stand in one more line for making the payment.

For payment, credit/ debit card is not accepted and we should tender exact change or else the amount will not be accepted. After payment of cash we should stand in one more queue to get a signature on the cash paid receipt.

We are in 21st century but the MCC Zonal Offices are working like age old office. When our Prime Minister is talking about Digital Era, this is the state of affair of our MCC Offices.

When such a big city like Bengaluru has made the tax payment online about a decade back, why MCC is not able to establish the online payment system? For over ten years whenever I visit the MCC Office for house tax payment, I have made it a point to meet the Sub-Registrar or Tashildar, who is in-charge of the Office and inquire about online payment system. But every year I am told that the online payment system will be introduced this year which has never happened.

MCC is behaving as though development of a software for online payment is like a rocket science.

If the authorities are not capable of sorting out the teething problems in the online payment system and build a foolproof system, it is better that the new Commissioner takes a decision to depute the MCC staff for door- to-door house tax collection.

This will be of great help to the citizens during this COVID-19 period and MCC will be earning the revenue.
