Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway: No entry for bikes, autos to prevent accidents

September 15, 2021

Mysore/Mysuru: If you are a two-wheeler rider, then you must know that you cannot enter the Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has a notified rule that prevents the entry of two-wheeler riders on any Expressway.

Even autos and agricultural vehicles are not allowed on the main carriageway. All such vehicles must take the wide service roads that have been constructed on both sides of the Expressway. This rule will come into force once the Highway construction is completed in 2022. Roads are generally notified as ‘Expressway’ with a permissible speed limit. The priority of the NHAI is to ensure safety, speed and the Expressway has been designed to achieve these objectives.

The Expressway has four service roads on either side (with two lanes each) and the main carriageway is six lanes — three on either side. By banning motorbikes, autos and other slow-moving vehicles, NHAI wants to prevent accidents.

The Expressway passes through many villages, towns and mini cities from Mysuru to Bengaluru and a majority of people depend on two-wheelers, autos and tractors for transport. If they are allowed to criss-cross the Expressway many accidents will occur as there will be a continuous stream of fast-moving vehicles.

These guidelines are not new as they have already been mentioned in the National Highway and Expressway manuals and have been notified and this is the standard that is followed across the world. The same system is in place at Nehru Outer Ring Road in Hyderabad and  the P.V. Narasimha Rao Expressway that connects Mehdipatnam to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport Road in Hyderabad, a senior NHAI official told Star of Mysore.

These vehicles and motorbikes can take the service road instead of the main carriageway. “If we allow motorbikes and slow-moving vehicles on the Expressway, the very purpose of the 10-lane road is defeated. The Expressway has been planned and designed in such a way to travel between Mysuru and Bengaluru in 90 minutes,” he said.

Elaborate and scientific planning has been made to the service roads too along with many bypasses and flyovers, underpasses for smooth movement of villagers all along the Expressway and that is why the cost has shot up to Rs. 8,000 crores, the Officer added.

Two-wheeler riders form the second most number of fatalities after pedestrians. Following repeated accidents on the Nelamangala Expressway and the Electronics City Elevated Expressway in Bengaluru where many two-wheelers have fallen off the elevated road, there were suggestions in the past to ban two-wheelers on the stretch. The proposal was, however, withdrawn later.

Slow moving vehicles travelling at 40 kmph obstruct high-speed traffic that go at 80 kmph and above. There is already a rule that all higher speeding vehicles must use the right lane while other vehicles must stick to the left. “This does not always happen. Some two-wheelers intentionally block the high-speeding vehicles and this leads to accidents,” officials said.

Great no two-wheeler allowed on the express highway…

  2. Emkay says:

A very good decision but must be strictly implemented. The other nuisance and danger is the slow moving trucks and buses on the fast track they should be allowed to ply only in the last lane on the right failing should be fined heavily.

  3. Prasanna says:

Hope so the rules will be strictly enforced

  4. Deep says:

Professional riders should be allowed on this road…

  5. Gilan says:

Super bikes need to be allowed because it can travel faster than a four wheeler and good handling

  6. boregowda says:

Will there be natural (people, animals and bullock carts) and artificial (unscientific humps) speed breakers on this road

  7. Shantala says:

So, he current 4-lane express way, and the proposed 10-lane expressway are meant for 4-wheelers only. the car ownership undoubtedly jumps masively, particularly the demand for larger cars. The convenience of residence to residence services between the 2 cities is an attraction. Cars generate taxes for the government, the more of them the better!
Where does this leave the public transport, within the city and between the cities?
Ameri in early 1950s, under Eisenhower administration created the express ways, mainly to move war supplies in the event of a war, ended soon using them for 4-wheelers, and thus was born the massive gas guzzler cars costing very little to fill them with petrol ( gas). The car culture was born. Public transport plans were shelved permanently, and the rest is history..
The difference is America has a population , a third of what India has, but their pollution contribution means, Texas , suffered freezing winter last time, not heard of in its history of existence! Flash flood s have become common occurence.
Well, the massive population of India, adding one Australia every year, and counting with pollution accelerating each year, the karma deciding the results!

Great decision but should be strictly implemented.

Sometimes I just wonder, How big fools set these rules. Someone shall put them in trucks and ask the at what speed they are traveling. Since it is about speed only then why allow trucks on the same roads where they travel at less then half speed permitted on these roads.
I hope you fools still remember the incident where some moron cop (on Mysore-Bangalore highway) kicked a running Superbike to stop him who died on the spot so that he can get some money for him by imposing some nonsense.
Let’s just say, have these morons who set these rules seen any Superbike in there life?
    have the driven it?
Do they know how much road tax we pay for a bike?
Does they think that we as a biker don’t know about the safety rules?
    Don’t we have driving license?

If you are banning on traveling only the why you are allowing the bike companies to sell only?
Why taking all the trials ans interviews for issuing driving license for bike
Why taking road tax for the same?

I really am not that reach, or I was getting a Superbike and burning it on these road every day.
You just can’t give birth to child and then tell him to breath only in moms lap, because in that case its better to opt for an abortion. Because anyway you are going to kill the child only. You fools are saying the same by implementation of these you Jurks.
You saying us that buy a bike but don’t ride it. Have these morons ever traveled on these service roads? To know how much obstacles on these service road.
We get bikes because of our love, passion, feelings and the way we have to ride on service road, it kills the byke engine along with our feeling passion love freedom, everything.

Ultimately The Great INDIA is finally becoming the country of people who are slaves of some fools.
It’s nothing less then Taliban ruled Afghanistan.

Please let me also join your group so that we can get a little freedom.
Sometimes I feel like I too shall have the power to kick these fools who are setting these rules,.
how hard it is to understand the other sides of there statement? Like everywhere there is no parking but they won’t provide a parking place.
They will allow to get bike so that they can get road tax, Licenses cost but we can’t ride🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕

  10. Neil DCosta says:

The NICE corridor is a classic example of a lack of driving discipline and absolute indifference by the authorities. I have complained several times that trucks should compulsorily drive in the left lane only but no one cares. Fast moving traffic has to keep dodging between lanes causing huge snarl-ups specially during the morning hours when traffic towards Electronics City is heavy.
You can have 10 lanes in each direction, but if there is no driving discipline enforced, the entire purpose of such infrastructure is defeated.

  11. Kent says:

Superbike should be allowed. Because it’s very fast than cars
