When ideology intrudes, art suffers

December 16, 2021

Sir,

When ideology intrudes, art suffers. That appears to be the disturbing development in which the present Rangayana Director Addanda Cariappa finds himself when a coterie of vested interests seem to be determined to throwing a spanner into the excellent work of all round effort in the field of theatre and art in Rangayana.

Of course, this is not the first time how some elements ganged up to oust a woman of impeccable professional talent when she was appointed as Director. Art always stands by its own merit and popularity for good work done  creates jealousy and in this case if some group nurse some ideology it becomes  a potent weapon to create trouble. This is exactly what has happened in the case of the present Rangayana Director.

The fact that during Covid pandemic period several artistes were paid reflects the concern of the Director.  Cariappa has endeared himself by his record of doing an excellent work during a short time and the art-loving people of Mysuru have been appreciating his work.

The guest list for this year’s Bahuroopi reads like who is who in achievement in the world of art and literature. As human beings they are bound to have different ideologies but what brings them together is the common bond of good work in their chosen field divorced from ideology. Of course, these vested interests can be irritating nuisance that makes the work of the Director stressful and hope good sense prevails so that he is allowed to do the work with full co-operation.

In any organisation differences are bound to exist and specially in the world of art they are much more sensitive and are notoriously temperamental but that should not come in the way of the world of art
