STEMI Management Model being set up across district to offer timely medical services for heart patients

Mysore/Mysuru: “Of the total non-epidemic deaths in the world, India’s share is 12 percent which is mostly due to blockages in blood vessel (coronary arteries). It is estimated that about 2 to 3 million people are being affected by heart-related diseases every year in our country. In India, on an average, for every minute four persons die of heart attack. In Karnataka, which has a population of 6.97 crore, it is estimated that about 96,150 people suffer from heart diseases every year,” said District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. K.H. Prasad in a press release.

Heart patients should be given treatment in the first 90 minutes of showing acute symptoms. After that, delay in every 30 minutes results in the damage of heart. The Chief Minister has directed to select 30 additional Spokes (an organisation of care that works with the Primary Care sector and is integrated with multi-disciplinary teams of Health professionals) and accordingly 30 Spokes have been identified and mapping of two Hubs have been completed. With STEMI (Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction, a Heart attack due to Blood clot) Management programme, 75 Spokes and 5 Hubs have now become functional.

STEMI Management Model is a programme to offer good and timely medical services for heart patients at taluk-level hospitals to save time and money apart from reducing death rate. In Mysuru district, STEMI Model is being set up at H.D. Kote, Nanjangud, Periyapatna, Hunsur and K.R. Nagar Taluk Hospitals.
