The population of stray dogs has exploded in the city and is causing a health alarm.  We understand the concern about animals in general but the stray dogs problem in particular needs urgent intervention.

In Gokulam, this is certainly a valid issue that needs to be addressed for the safety and well-being of the residents. Stray dogs can pose a threat, particularly to senior citizens who walk in the area morning and evening.

It is unfortunate that the situation has escalated to the point where the dogs have become aggressive, especially in response to rising temperatures. Also, the practice of feeding stray dogs may be contributing to the problem by encouraging the dogs to linger in the area.

It’s important for the local authorities to take action to address this issue. One potential solution is the implementation of a comprehensive sterilisation programme for stray dogs. This approach can help curb the population growth of stray dogs. Furthermore, efforts should be made to educate the community about responsible pet ownership and the implications of feeding stray animals. Encouraging residents, including foreigners visiting the area, to refrain from feeding or encouraging stray dogs can help mitigate the problem in the long run.

In addition to these measures, steps should be taken to enhance the overall cleanliness of the locality. Regular sanitation efforts and raising awareness about the importance of maintaining a clean environment can contribute to a healthier and safer community.

We, the members of Mysuru Civil Society Group, recommend the Mysuru City Corporation and animal welfare organisations like PFA to discuss these concerns and address the stray dog issue in Gokulam. By working together with the relevant authorities and the community, it is possible to find effective and humane solutions to this problem.
