KSOU celebrates Basava Jayanti

Mysore/Mysuru: Davangere University Vice-Chancellor Prof. B.D. Kumbara has lamented that the present generation is hesitant to take care of aged parents and are leaving them at old age homes.

He was speaking after inaugurating Basava Jayanti celebrations organised by KSOU at Cauvery auditorium in Mukthagangothri campus here recently.

Wondering how they would benefit if people admit their aged parents to old age homes and worship idols of deities, Prof. Kumbara observed that those who do not have respect for their parents, must read the Vachanas of Basavanna and other Sharanas in order to understand how we should live for the cause of the society.

“Basavanna had fought against inequality in the 12th century itself. Basavanna, a great social reformer that he was, brought about a revolution in the society. The Vachanas of Basavanna and other Saints have brought about revolutionary changes in building an equal society,” he said.

Asserting that the Vachanas  are highly influential in bringing about changes in the society, Prof. Kumbara said the Vachanas brought out the truth at a time when superstitions ruled the roost in the society. This helped the Movements to get a renewed life for building an equal society, he said while stressing on the need for the present and future generations to take forward Basavanna’s legacy by propagating his Vachanas. Understanding of Sharana values will help younger generation in leading a valued and purposeful life, he added.

KSOU VC Prof. Sharanappa V. Halse, Registrar K.B. Praveen, Registrar (Evaluation) Dr. H. Vishwanath, Academic Dean Prof. Lakshmi, KSOU Study Centre Dean Prof. Ramanatham, Prog. Organiser Dr. N.R. Chandregowda and others were present.
