Walkathon marks World Physiotherapy Day in city

Fitness camps to be held tomorrow

Mysuru: Walkathon by the students and faculty of JSS College of Physiotherapy, Mysuru, senior Physiotherapists and others marked World Physiotherapy Day (World Physical Therapy Day) in city this morning.

About 250 persons, who assembled in front of Kote Anjaneyaswamy Temple at the North Gate of Mysore Palace, took out a rally, which was flagged off by Kishan S. Bedare, K.L. Shrijith, Nanda Kishore and Kushal Wadhwani of Mysuru Warriors team; Mohandas and Sharavan, Physiotherapists of Mysuru Warriors team and alumni of JSS College of Physiotherapy.

The Walkathon, with participants holding placards highlighting the importance of physical activities, passed through Clock Tower in front of Town Hall, Gandhi Square to reach Sayyaji Rao Road and culminated at the starting point.

Earlier, Vijay Samuel, Assistant Professor, JSS College of Physiotherapy and In-charge of Department of Physiotherapy, JSS Hospital, Mysuru, in his welcome address said that the World Physical Therapy Day is being held with the theme ‘Physical Activity for Life’ this year, highlighting the important role that physical therapists play in healthy ageing.

He said that in most countries, levels of inactivity were higher in girls and women compared to boys and men across all ages and added that inactivity increases with age.

Samuel said that people were becoming inactive, with many adults spending 70% or more time sitting down and added that regular physical activity could reduce the risk of colon cancer by 30-40%, cardiovascular by 20-35%, hypertension by 26-28%, stroke, breast cancer, and type 2 diabetes by 20-30%.

He said that free fitness camps will be conducted on Sept. 9 (Saturday) with evaluation and advice on physical activity at Kukkarahalli Lake from 6 am to 9 am and at Mall of Mysore from 4 pm to 9 pm.

Dr. Kavitha Raja, Principal, JSS College of Physiotherapy, proposed a vote of thanks. Nadeem Shariff, Physiotherapist of Ballari Tuskers team and also the alumni of JSS College of Physiotherapy, Raghu, HoD of Physiotherapy, Adarsh, Convener of Indian Association of Physiotherapy and others were present.
