Rs. 2 crore for 20×30 site: Common man priced out

August 26, 2025

Sir,

This has reference to “MDA site e-auction bumper — 20×30 Rs. 2 crore, 50×80 Rs. 9 crore” (SOM dated Aug. 23, 2025).

The basic necessities of human life and survival are food, water, shelter and clothing. The City Improvement Trust Board (CITB), and later the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), were created with the very purpose of helping the have-nots and the common man secure a roof over their heads at affordable prices. Instead, MUDA ended up encouraging private developers left, right and centre, allowing them to create layouts and sell plots at fancy prices, defeating the very purpose of its establishment.

Now, the Mysuru Development Authority (MDA) has sold sites in e-auction at shockingly high prices — Rs. 22,500 per sq. ft. for a 50×80 site (Rs. 9 crore) and an astounding Rs. 33,333 per sq. ft. (Rs. 2 crore) for a corner 20×30 site in Vijayanagar 4th Stage, 2nd Phase.

Who can buy at such exorbitant prices? Probably only those with truckloads of black money, indulging in money laundering, thereby setting a dangerous precedent.

Land prices in Mysuru have already skyrocketed, and this e-auction only rubs salt in the wounds. Rentals, too, have increased tenfold in this growing city. Many people migrate to Mysuru believing it to be affordable and free from Bengaluru-like traffic woes. But this e-auction is nothing short of a sham.

The ripple effect of this bumper sale will be disastrous. Site owners across Mysuru will now begin quoting inflated prices, citing these unbelievable auction rates. God save the common man who dreams of owning a site or building a house in this modest city!

The Deputy Commissioner, who is also the Chairman of the MDA, along with other authorities concerned, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), must thoroughly investigate and verify the credentials of those who purchased the 20×30 site for Rs. 2 crore and the 50×80 site for Rs. 9 crore. Until the investigation is complete, registration of these sites should not be permitted.
