International Museum Day: Free entry to Mysuru Rail Museum on May 18

May 15, 2026

Mysore/Mysuru: Mysuru Rail Museum will celebrate International Museum Day on May 18. This year’s theme, “Museums for Bridging Divides,” highlights the vital role of museums as spaces that bring people together, foster dialogue, preserve shared heritage and deepen public understanding across cultural and social boundaries.

Established in 1979, the Mysuru Rail Museum holds a unique place in India’s railway heritage. It is one of the earliest regional railway museums in the country and the second after the National Rail Museum, New Delhi.

Managed by South Western Railway, the museum showcases the evolution and growth of Indian Railways through its rich and diverse collection.

Among its prized exhibits are vintage steam locomotives, railway coaches, inspection cars, telecommunication equipment, royal coaches, and the famous Maharani’s saloon coach.

The museum presents galleries and displays that offer visitors a vivid insight into the technological, cultural and historical journey of Indian Railways.

On the occasion of International Museum Day, free entry will be provided to all visitors on May 18. The general public, students, families, tourists, railway enthusiasts and heritage lovers may visit the museum and gain a deeper understanding of the history and development of Indian Railways, often referred to as the lifeline of the nation.

This celebration aims to reinforce the role of the museum as a centre for learning, heritage appreciation and public engagement.
