Madikeri, June 6 – The investigation into the stabbing of an undertrial prisoner at Madikeri Central Jail has intensified, with senior prison officials conducting a detailed inspection of the facility yesterday.
Director General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services) Alok Kumar and IGP (Southern Zone Prisons) Divyashree visited the jail and reviewed security arrangements, barrack management and operational procedures following the incident.
They questioned jail staff and undertrial prisoners housed in various barracks to gather information on the circumstances leading to the assault.
They also examined the scene of the attack, reviewed CCTV footage, verified duty rosters and collected details on inmate strength and classification from the Jail Superintendent.
An FIR has been registered in connection with the incident at Madikeri Rural Police Station. Alok Kumar reviewed the investigation with Station Officer Chandrashekar and Dy.SP Suraj, who briefed him on seized materials, ongoing inquiries and interrogation of the accused.
Describing the incident as regrettable, Alok Kumar said officials have been instructed to take preventive measures to avoid a recurrence and to improve overall prison conditions. He also stressed the importance of counselling, education and rehabilitation for inmates.
Departmental inquiry

Divyashree said the accused Rajesh allegedly attacked fellow undertrial Hemanth with a sharp weapon, inflicting grievous injuries. Hemanth was initially treated at Madikeri Hospital and later shifted to K.R. Hospital in Mysuru, where he succumbed to injuries despite treatment.
She further said the incident indicated lapses in supervision and added that a departmental inquiry will be conducted, with action to follow based on the findings.
Officials also noted that around 45 percent of guard posts at the jail are currently vacant, with staffing levels at about 55 percent. The cold climate in Madikeri and the need for frequent emergency medical transfers have added to the workload of prison staff.
A proposal to fill vacant posts has already been submitted to the Government, the DGP said, adding that recruitment will be taken up once approvals are received.
