Mysuru: The Kambala Committee has reaffirmed that the Mysuru Dasara Kambala will be conducted in a manner that preserves both tradition and the environment.
Speaking to Star of Mysore, Committee President Murulidhar Rai said Kambala is deeply rooted in the land and its cultural heritage and assured that the event at Sathagalli would not cause any ecological damage.
“Kambala has an inseparable bond with the earth. In Dakshina Kannada, it is conducted only after offering prayers to the guardian spirit of the land. Before making any preparations, we receive prasada from Kukke Subramanya Temple,” he said.
“The word ‘Kambala’ itself refers to slush or mud and the event is an act of worship performed through the race of paired buffaloes in slush fields. Even in Mysuru, it will be organised without causing any harm to the environment,” Rai said.
Only shrubs cleared
Responding to concerns over tree cutting at the venue, Rai clarified that only small shrubs and thorny bushes would be cleared to prepare the track, while all large trees would remain untouched. “We successfully conducted Kambala in Bengaluru without cutting down trees and we will follow the same approach in Mysuru,” he said.
He also dismissed speculation that the lake at the identified venue would be covered or closed for the event. “Under no circumstances will the lake be covered. On the contrary, it will be cleaned and Kambala will be conducted amidst its natural surroundings,” he said.
Emphasising that Kambala is intrinsically linked to nature, Rai said the organisers would never compromise on tradition, culture or environmental protection.
Mysuru-Kambala connection
Rai also highlighted the historical ties between the Mysore royal family and the rulers of Mulki, who traditionally organised Kambala events. He said members of the Mysore royal family frequently attended these events, strengthening the cultural bond between the two regions.
According to Rai, organising Kambala as part of Mysuru Dasara would further strengthen the long-standing relationship between Mysuru and Dakshina Kannada. Appealing to Mysureans, Rai urged them not to believe rumours or misleading messages about the event.
“The people of Mysuru are sensitive and warm-hearted. It is our responsibility to ensure their sentiments are respected. The Bengaluru Kambala attracted lakhs of spectators without a single untoward incident only through divine grace. We will conduct the Mysuru Kambala, ensuring that the environment remains undisturbed,” he assured.
