For the last several months, the roads of Mysuru have been dug up. Underground cables are being laid, the underground drainage pipes are being replaced, roadside drains are being re-constructed, etc., etc.

Before the work is begun, the public is not informed. After the work is done, the pits are half-heartedly filled and the roads remain scarred with scratches from JCBs and the bumps and pits from the digging/building work.

We citizens are expected to use these roads as they are with no complaints, walking, cycling, riding two-wheelers or driving in other vehicles.

But then, a leader comes to visit! Oh, the road-making and cleaning activity!! But mind you. Only those roads which may be used by the VIP cavalcade! Smooth roads, all signs of digging and construction quickly covered up, all visible garbage cleared! Even roadside vendors have been asked to stay away.

When will this VIP culture end? Why are we, the lesser mortals, not entitled to good roads and clean surroundings? Do any of our leaders ever stop to think how many people are inconvenienced for days just because they are visiting for a couple of hours?

Do we elect our leaders to inaugurate buildings/events? When will our country become “for the people, by the people, of the people” — no greater, no lesser mortals!?
