District-level Dasara Sports Meet held

Athletes from various Taluks of Mysuru take part in the day-long event

Mysuru: The District-level Dasara Sports Meet jointly organised by District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES) began at Chamundi Vihar Stadium in Nazarbad this morning.

The day-long sports meet was inaugurated by Karnataka State Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authority Vice-Chairperson Dr. Pushpa Amarnath.

Speaking on the occasion, Pushpa Amarnath said that more than winning, participating in sports events was important.

“More than 150 athletes from each Taluk of the District are taking part in the event. The event has witnessed girls outnumbering the boys. It is also important that the girls reach great heights in sports of their choice,” she added.

Karnataka State Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authority Vice-Chairperson Dr. Pushpa Amarnath along with an athlete lighting the traditional lamp to inaugurate District-level Dasara Sports Meet at Chamundi Vihar Stadium in city this morning as DYES Assistant Director Bhaskar Nayak, Dasara Sports Sub-Committee Deputy Special Officer K. Johnson and others look on.

Stating that Dasara Sports was a launch pad for the athletes, Dr. Pushpa Amarnath called upon the athletes to utilise the opportunity provided to prove their skills.

She also urged the athletes to treat winning and losing equally.

DYES Assistant Director Bhaskar Nayak, who spoke on the occasion, said, “Athletes securing first and second place in individual events and winners in group events will qualify for the Divisional-level Dasara Sports.”

Competitions for men and women were held in track and field events, swimming, yogasana, kabaddi, hockey, cycling, netball, badminton, volleyball, basketball, handball, gymnastics, boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, judo, lawn tennis, fencing, kho kho, ball badminton, table tennis, archery, taekwondo, throwball, shooting and karate.

DYES also conducted yogasana competition during which the participants performed Pada Hastasana, Aakarna Dhanurasana, Urdva Dhanurasana and Ardha Matsyendrasana.

The sports events were organised at Chamundi Vihar Stadium, Maharaja’s College Grounds and Maharshi School.

Meanwhile, the State-level Dasara CM Cup competitions will be held from Oct. 11 to 14 at Chamundi Vihar Stadium.

100 mts sprint

Men: 1. R. Prajwal (10.80 sec, Mysuru), 2. L. Pavan (11.26 sec, Mysuru), 3. R. Jashwanth (11.45 sec, Hunsur).

Women: 1. M. Mamatha (12.84 sec, Mysuru), 2. J. Saadhana (13.40 sec, Mysuru), 3. Prarthana  (14.46 sec, K.R. Nagar).

400 mts run

Women: 1. M.A. Varsha (59.00 sec, Mysuru), 2. S. Deekshitha (1.04.66 sec, Mysuru), 3. B. Rishika (1.10.80 sec, Periyapatna).

1500 mts run

Women: 1. K.M. Prakruthi (5.52.58 sec, T. Narasipur, 2. M.V. Smithashree (6.06.44 sec, Periyapatna), 3. G.G. Rohini (6.32.20 sec, Mysuru).
