Mysuru: There was a powerful blast sound in the city this afternoon which shook buildings and windows creating panic in many areas. Star of Mysore office in Bannimantap was flooded with calls from worried residents, especially from Kuvempunagar, Saraswathipuram, V.V. Puram, Railway Yard, Paduvarahalli, Yadavagiri and Bannimantap.
Residents told SOM that the sound was heard at 12.45 pm and it originated from Kuvempunagar M-Block. Some residents even said that the vessels in their kitchen fell off the shelves due to the impact. Rumours spread that there was an earthquake.
When SOM contacted Department of Mines and Geology officials, they said that even they had heard the sound and it was too early to ascertain the actual cause.
When contacted, Prof. H.T. Basavarajappa of Earth Science Department, University of Mysore, said that they too felt the rattle as some windows shook. Ruling out the possibility of an earthquake, he said that the sound could have been caused by a quarry blast.
There is no quarry in and around mysuru to make such an impact…
