First-aid workshop for JSS teachers

Mysuru, Mar.7- First-aid training can literally save people’s lives and there are many other benefits. A small time invested into learning first aid can produce a lifetime advantage. Teachers being the immediate care providers at school, if they are trained in first aid they can give timely aid for the school children. In an effort to address this concern, Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College, Mysuru, had organised a one-day first aid workshop for teachers of JSS Schools under JSS Mahavidyapeetha recently. In all, 28 teachers participated in this event.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. G.V. Manjunath, Vice-Principal, JSS Medical College, Dr. M.R. Narayana Murthy, Head of the Department and Dr. N.C. Ashok, Professor, Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College, by watering a plant. Dr. M.C. Smitha welcomed the gathering.

The session began with introduction and guidelines in first aid by Dr. D. Sunil Kumar followed by first-aid in ‘Dental injuries’ by Dr. Satyam Sil; Management of wounds, burns & drowning by Dr. M. Shwethashree; Handling the situation like fainting, syncope, shock  and convulsions was briefed by Dr. M.C. Smitha; Dr. B. Madhu enlightened on ‘treatment for animal bite & poisoning’ while Dr. Nayana Shabadi explained on first aid management of fracture & dislocation.

Post-lunch sessions included ‘Briefing and Hands-on exercise’ on Basic Life Support (BLS) by Dr. Akkamahadevi, Head, Department of Emergenry Medicine and Dr. K.N. Archana, Professor Department of Anaesthesiology, JSS Medical College & Hospital.

Each participant was made to demonstrate BLS techniques on mannequins. This was followed by the valedictory which was chaired by Dr. Manjunath. On the occasion, First Aid Manual in Kannada was released and certificates were distributed to the participants and resource persons.

All the participants were provided with First Aid Kits along with the manual to their respective schools.
