Sir,
The letter by Melkote B. Jayaram titled ‘Check increasing vehicle population’ in som dated Apr. 14 is timely and also the need of the hour.
Rich class of the society having spacious bungalows with ample parking space can afford to have their own vehicles (car) including two-wheelers which are commonly used by everyone today as a matter of necessity. This stands to reason also.
But middle class people have developed a tendency to purchase cars as a status symbol availing the facility of ‘EMI’ scheme offered by banks and finance companies these days without having any parking space in their residences. This has resulted in the glut of vehicles on the roads creating traffic jams and accidents related with it. It has become a common sight these days to see vehicles parked in front of the houses overnight and some even for many days without any movement causing hindrance to other road-users. Adjoining vacant sites also provide free parking facility to such vehicle owners without seeking anybody’s permission.
It is appropriate to enforce the rule by the authorities concerned to accord permission to the buyers of four-wheelers only if they have parking space in their residences. This move may bring the situation under control to certain extent.
