Alert jail staff bust prisoner’s bid to smuggle ganja

December 30, 2023

Convict named Durgadatta Kalidasa Swamy allegedly tried to take the drug inside covertly by wrapping sellotape to his leg

Mysuru: A convict, who made a bid to smuggle ganja in a stealthy manner inside Mysuru Central Prison, has been caught red-handed by alert jail staff on security duty.

Durgadatta Kalidasa Swamy alias Mohammed Iqbal, 28, a native of Madikeri, is lodged at the jail following his conviction in a case. Following his ill-health, he had been taken to K.R. Hospital for treatment on Dec. 27. He returned at about 2.30 pm same day and staff on security duty frisked him only to find a sellotape wrapped in his leg. When the tape was opened, 76 grams of ganja was found inside, much to the dismay of the staff.

Befuddled over how he could possess ganja when he was escorted out by the jail staff, the jail authorities questioned him. He revealed that one Navel had kept the ganja near bathroom at K.R. Hospital, which he brought along while returning to the jail.

Following a complaint by Executive Jailer M.D. Dharanesh, Mandi SI N.V. Rangaswamy seized the ganja and registered a case, with the investigation underway.

As is the rule, the escort party whisking prisoners stay with them, restraining others from approaching them either to have a word or hand over anything to them. But still how could Swamy whoodwink the escort party and lay his hands on the drug, is the question that has came up for discussion. Moreover, what was the jail staff doing outside, when the prisoner went to bathroom and wrapped the sellotape? How did the ganja supplier receive information about his visit to K.R. Hospital? Likewise, several such questions have cropped up after he was caught with ganja.
