Alleged harassment by teacher: Girl student commits suicide

January 25, 2018

K.R. Pet/Mysuru:  A girl student of Navodaya Minority Residential School at K.R. Pet, unable to bear the harassment of the teacher, committed suicide by hanging self at her hostel room in K.R. Pet last evening.

While the girl student has been identified as Zaibunnisa (14), daughter of Mohammed Ibrahim and Zubeid couple, residents of Uppinangadi in Mangaluru, the teacher in question has been identified as Ravi. Zaibunnisa, who was admitted to the school last year, was studying in eighth standard at the school.

It is learnt that yesterday at about 4.30 pm, Zaibunnisa had called her mother using her friend’s mobile phone and had complained that Ravi, a teacher at the school had allegedly hit her on the head with a rod and she was bleeding besides stating that Ravi was harassing her too much and pleaded with her mother to take her back.

Zaibunnisa’s mother Zubeid is said to have somehow convinced her daughter to adjust for some days as education was very important to her and even the exams were fast approaching besides telling her that she would come to the school next week and speak with the school authorities about Ravi harassing her.

Relatives of the deceased Zaibunnisa and members of SDPI staging a
protest in front of the MMC&RI mortuary in city this morning.

But yesterday at about 5.30 pm, Zaibunnisa was found hanging to the ceiling fan in her hostel room by her friends, who informed teacher Ravi. Ravi, along with other staff of the hostel, who rushed to the room, cut the veil she had used to hang herself and rushed her to K.R. Pet Hospital, where the doctors declared her ‘brought dead’ and informed  the Police.

K.R. Pet Police Inspector Venkateshaiah and staff, who rushed to the spot, conducted mahazar and informed Zaibunnisa’s parents, who rushed from Uppinangadi to K.R. Pet at about 2 am today.

The girl’s mother then narrated her conversation with her daughter an hour before she took the extreme step to the Police and demanded immediate arrest of teacher Ravi.

There are about 120 inmates in the hostel and the Police enquired with the hostel inmates, who reportedly confirmed that Ravi was indeed harassing Zaibunnisa, following which, the Police registered a case of harassment against Ravi and shifted the body of Zaibunnisa to MMC&RI mortuary in Mysuru.

The parents and relatives of the deceased girl, this morning, staged a protest in front of the mortuary and were joined by the members of SDPI, who demanded immediate arrest of teacher Ravi, citing that he (Ravi) was responsible for Zaibunnisa to take the extreme step. K.R. Pet Police are investigating.
