Mysuru: A talk on ‘Invasion of Privacy’ by a renowned scholar Dr. Nikhil Moro, Professor and Department Chair of Mass Communication, Norfolk, State University, Virginia, USA, was organised at St. Joseph’s First Grade College (FGC) in Jayalakshmipuram recently.
Sharing his vast experience and expertise in the law of India and America, he said that, the history of privacy could be earmarked in ancient Indian times of Dharma Shastra that gained prominence and legal structure during 19th century. Privacy law is a penumbra under the wing of civil law, which is significant in the US when compared to India, he opined.
Appropriation of name or likeness for commercial purpose, publication of private and embarrassing facts, publishing material that depicts an individual in false light and intrusion upon solitude were the four major torts discussed in the session.
The talk was held in association with UGC-UPE-FA-II, University with Potential for Excellence Project, Department of Studies in Communication and Journalism, Manasagangothri, University of Mysore.
The ability of philosophical questioning, caring for other species and craving to live on our legacy is what makes us human, said the AEJMC award winner.
