Transport Department launches new tamper-proof system; mandatory to test once every six months

Mysuru: The State Transport Department has introduced barcoded Emission Test Certificates, replacing the earlier hologram-based certificates, as part of its efforts to make the emission testing system more secure and transparent.

The new system, which came into effect about two months ago, applies to all vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers and heavy motor vehicles. Obtaining an emission test certificate every six months continues to be mandatory.

The Transport Department has authorised private emission testing centres to conduct the tests, while the Police continue to impose fines on vehicle owners who fail to obtain valid emission certificates.

Under the revised system, emission readings recorded by the testing equipment are uploaded directly to an online portal, leaving little scope for tampering or manual alterations. Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) can access the certificates online.

The redesigned certificate contains details such as the vehicle registration number, make, year of manufacture and emission levels. A barcode printed at the bottom of the certificate replaces the earlier hologram sticker and allows officials to instantly retrieve the vehicle’s details by scanning it.

Meanwhile, rumours circulating on social media that emission testing had been suspended in Karnataka due to a shortage of hologram stickers have proved to be unfounded.

A visit by Star of Mysore to emission testing centres near the RTO West Office in Chamarajapuram and the RTO East Office in Rajivnagar confirmed that testing services are continuing without interruption.

Officials said the shift to barcoded certificates has eliminated the need for hologram stickers, ensuring the service remains unaffected.
