On June 14, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha hosted a Bharatanatyam recital by two promising young dancers, Pooja Sugam and K.M. Sameeksha. Under the guidance of Guru Vid. Vijaykumar of Chennai, these artistes are steadily carving a niche for themselves through compelling duet performances. Their exploration of choreography was evident in the two self-choreographed pieces they presented, indicating a bright future ahead. This event was sponsored by Dr. C.G. Narasimhan and family.
The recital began with Muthuswami Dikshitar’s ‘Sri Gananaatham Bhajamyaham’ in Raga Kanakangi, which was thoughtfully choreographed by the duo. This was followed by ‘Om Sharavanabhava’ (Raga: Shanmukhapriya), a unique composition by Ghatam Karthik.
The dancers effectively portrayed the various facets of Lord Muruga, with admirable stage presence and excellent coordination. Their crisp footwork and mature abhinaya (expressive gestures) were notable, particularly in the piece ‘Ardhanareeshwaram’ (Raga: Kumudakriya, Composer: Muthuswami Dikshitar). Guru Vijaykumar’s brilliant choreography came alive in their confident execution.
Though the programme included just five items, the duo left a deep impression on the audience. Pooja’s subtle abhinaya was captivating, while Sameeksha’s vigorous portrayal of Shiva exuded strength and grace. The highlight of the evening was a padavarna composed by Vid. Lalgudi G. Jayaraman in Raga Charukeshi — ‘Innum En Manam.’ This Tamil varna explores the longing of the Nayika to unite with Lord Krishna.
The choreography’s rapid transitions and unexpected sequences heightened the emotional depth and the inclusion of Kanakadasa as a sanchari was particularly moving.
Their final piece, ‘Vishweshwara Darshan Kara’ (Raga: Sindhubhairavi, Composer: Swathi Tirunal), featured an innovative prelude — a dramatisation of two devotees journeying to Kashi. This segment, conceptualised by the dancers themselves, added a creative and observational dimension to the performance.
Overall, Pooja Sugam and Sameeksha affirmed their talent and dedication, showing great promise as future torch-bearers of classical dance.
