Sir,
According to the Rules of Road Regulations, Section 118 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 (59 of 1988), all the drivers of motor vehicles shall slow down when they approach a road junction, pedestrian crossing or a road corner and shall not enter any such intersection, junction or crossing until they become aware that they may not endanger the safety of the pedestrians or other motorists.
This should be followed whether electronic signals are present or not at the pedestrian crossing or junction.
In addition to this, those who want to proceed towards left side at the junction should move on to the left side of the road and wait on the extreme left and those who want to go either straight or right should move to right side of the road before reaching the Circle.
Waiting on the wrong side may result in honking by the vehicles waiting behind, if green signal comes first for them. Trying to move fast on yellow signal may lead to signal jumping, as the drivers mainly are focusing the vehicles moving ahead rather than following the signal ahead. On yellow signal vehicles are not supposed to cross the zebra lines.
However, those vehicles which have already crossed the stop line by the time yellow signal flashes can proceed further. It is regularly being observed that many are jumping the red signal and going ahead at the city centre obstructing the movement of pedestrians, which may invite risk to both pedestrians and the riders.
