Be cautious of Vitamin C dosage

June 6, 2017

Sir,

The ‘Health Capsule’ regarding Vitamin C published in Star of Mysore recently appears to substantiate the notion that higher dose of Vitamin C will result in good health and longevity of life. The above notion is only partly true. There is no doubt that Vitamin C is an excellent anti-oxidant but it acts as a double-edged sword.

It is believed that when it scavenges oxy radicals, at the end of the radical chain it turns into a radical itself. Thus it may cause harm as a radical.

In the light of the above, it is worthwhile to remember our ancient saying, “Even the nectar at high amounts may turn into poison.” There is no reason to believe that higher the dose, higher the benefits. Hence, all the fallacies and fads should be approached and interpreted with caution.

I am not from the medical field and with due respect to the learned writer, I quote from health magazines that an excess amount of Vitamin C is a waste since it passes off in urine without utilising the benefits.
On the day you have citrus fruit like orange, lemon juice, it is better to avoid Vitamin C supplement.
Likewise, excess amount of Calcium supplement intake is linked to kidney stone formation.

  2. Katie Gironda says:

You are entirely wrong according to 2 time novel prize winner linus pauling, Dr cathcart, Dr Irwin stone, Dr Thomas levy, and many others. I have taken 20 grams of vitamin c everyday for 4 years and my body is thriving compared to how sick I was! No more allergies, no more multiple sclerosis. You may not know that animals produce large amount of vitamin c in their bodies. We no longer do because of a mutation. Vitamin c has NO toxic dosage. Ascorbic acid is s ac e and beneficial in large doses for life!!
