With reference to the news item published in Star of Mysore dated Feb.1 regarding the clearing of 600 kg of dry waste during the Chamundi foothill plogging drive, I wish to appreciate the commendable efforts of Mysuru City Corporation, volunteers and all stakeholders involved in keeping this sacred Hill clean.

While such cleaning drives are laudable, cleaning alone will not put an end to the recurring problem of littering. Certain strict and sustained measures are required to ensure long-term cleanliness and protection of the Hill. Measures such as a strict ban on the use of banned plastic covers by vendors at the top of the Hill, prohibiting food items carried in plastic covers, restricting plastic and food items at the entrance of the steps and roads leading to the Hill, installation of prominent awareness and display boards and imposing fines for littering will go a long way in preventing waste accumulation.

A similar effective initiative has already been successfully implemented at Mysuru Zoo, where strict regulation, awareness & enforcement have resulted in a cleaner & more disciplined environment. Adopting such a model at Hill will help preserve its ecological and spiritual significance.

Chamundi Hill is not just a tourist destination but a place of faith, heritage and pride for Mysureans. It therefore deserves continuous protection through firm policy decisions, strict enforcement and public cooperation, rather than periodic clean-up drives. The authorities may also seek help from industries to deploy guards and support enforcement, which could be taken up as a CSR initiative.

Such collective efforts will ensure that this natural and cultural treasure is preserved for future generations.
