MCC to launch special drive on Nov. 14

Mysuru:  After the successful launch of campaign against e-Waste on Sept. 17 this year, Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) is all set to go aggressive against the use of plastic in city.

Addressing presspersons at the MCC’s Old Council Hall, here this morning, Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath said that the MCC would organise a mega event on Children’s Day (Nov. 14) to launch an aggressive campaign against the use of plastic.

She said that an event would be held at Vidyavardhaka School in Kuvempunagar during which a special drive will be launched to collect plastic waste littered on roadside between 9 am and 10 am.

Adding that similar programmes would be held across 500 schools in city, Mayor Pushpalatha added that the participants would be administered oath against the use of plastic.

The Mysuru City Corporation has also appointed Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, former International Cricketer Javagal Srinath, Rajyotsava Awardee and Yoga Exponent Kushi and Guinness Book of World Record holder Ishan as the Ambassadors of anti-plastic campaign.

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), which is partnering with MCC for the novel cause, will be distributing cloth bags.

80 tonnes of plastic waste

Though MCC has banned production of plastic bags, buntings, banners, plastic plates and spoons, the city is producing 80 tonnes of plastic waste every day.

The City Corporation has taken measures to treat plastic waste at the waste segregation unit at Sewage Farm located in Vidyaranyapuram. MCC plans to use the plastic waste for manufacturing of inter-locking tiles and generating combustible fuel.

Pointing out that the MCC Council had given nod for the purchase of 168 new auto tippers, he said that audio announcement systems would be installed in auto tippers to create awareness on various initiatives taken up by MCC.
