City comes to a halt for Mahalaya Amavasya

September 19, 2017

Mysuru: The heritage city, which will be hosting Dasara festivities from Sept. 21 to 30, came to a grinding halt today as no Dasara-related works were carried out on account of Mahalaya Amavasya.

The Dasara elephants, led by Arjuna, which have been rehearsing for the Jumboo Savari (Sept. 30), stayed indoors as there were no rehearsals. The break came as a big relief for both mahouts and kavadis, who have been working tirelessly for this year’s grand procession. This apart, the Central Business District, which is always abuzz with activities, wore a deserted look owing to public holiday.

Meanwhile, thousands of people visited the famous Paschimavahini at Srirangapatna and performed shraddha, the rituals performed for departed souls in the family.

Though yearly death ceremonies are performed, Mahalaya Amavasya is the day during which shraddha is performed in remembrance of the ancestors.

The Amavasya which began at 11.52 am today will end at 10.59 am tomorrow (Sept. 20). People stay away from buying new things and venturing into new business as it is believed to be inauspicious. Soon after Amavasya ends (Sept.20), the Navaratri festivities commence from Sept. 21.
