City roads need stricter traffic enforcement

October 13, 2026

Sir,

I wish to draw the attention of the Mysuru District Administration, the Mysuru City Corporation and the Traffic Police to growing concerns over pedestrian safety and traffic violations across Mysuru city.

Several junctions lack adequate pedestrian signals and safe crossing facilities, putting school children, senior citizens and other pedestrians at risk.

In view of the Supreme Court’s directions on pedestrian safety, the authorities should conduct a comprehensive safety audit and provide pedestrian signals, zebra crossings and accessible footpaths wherever necessary.

Vehicles frequently run red lights, often without any visible enforcement action. This encourages others to flout traffic rules, putting innocent road users at risk.

Strict and consistent enforcement, including CCTV monitoring and penalties, is essential to curb such violations.

If offenders are allowed to go unchecked, more motorists are likely to follow their example. I experienced this first-hand earlier this year when a car ran a red light and hit my car, causing severe damage.

Another concern is the number of two-wheelers plying without rear number plates or with registration numbers concealed using cellotape or other materials, apparently to evade traffic penalties. The Traffic Police must intensify inspections and take strict action against such deliberate violations.

With thousands of additional vehicles and visitors expected during Dasara, the authorities must strengthen traffic management, enforce traffic rules, prevent vehicle-related offences and step up surveillance to deter crime and ensure the safety of residents and tourists. I urge the authorities to address these issues through coordinated and sustained action rather than occasional enforcement drives.
