More than 100 volunteers and members of various organisations took part in the cleaning of Kukkarahalli Lake premises this morning to spread the message of maintaining cleanliness and conservation and protection of flora and fauna in the Lake.
The cleanliness drive, organised by the daily walkers of the Lake and ‘Friends of Lake,’ saw participation of members of Let’s do it! Mysore, Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP), People Tree, students and inmates of Saraswathipuram Youth Hostel.
The cleaning, which began at about 7.30 am went on till about 9.30 am, during which the volunteers collected five large bags of plastic and other wastes including plastic covers, paper cups, empty liquor bottles etc.
Meanwhile, M.K. Sapthagirish of ‘Friends of Lake’, who is also a naturalist and wildlife conservationist, speaking to SOM, said that Kukkarahalli Lake housed a large number of plants, trees, birds, animals and insects which included 189 species of birds, 12 species of animals, more than 400 varieties of plants and trees, variety of butterflies and 35 types of spiders in the lake and added that every Mysurean should be proud of it and take steps to protect and conserve it.
He said that the garbage collected in dustbins near the children’s play area have not been cleared since many days and alleged that waste materials such as used dolls, banners, posters etc. of Rangayana were being dumped in the Lake premises and said that they would speak with Rangayana authorities to clean the dumped waste materials besides urging them to maintain cleanliness.
Corporator Snake Shyam, B.S. Prashanth of Let’s do it! Mysore, morning walkers Shanmugham and Harsha, S. Sobana and Dr. M.M. Shenoi, Working President and Secretary of MGP, students and others took part in the cleanliness drive.
