Mysore/Mysuru: Vice-President of Karnataka Higher Education Council Prof. S.R. Niranjan has voiced apprehension regarding the growing trend of excessive medication intake and pesticide use, which he believes is contributing to the rise in health issues among the populace.

Speaking after inaugurating the ‘World Health Day’ organised by Suyog Hospital and Suyog Educational Institutions at Ramakrishnanagar recently, Prof. Niranjan highlighted that the widespread use of pesticides in agriculture has resulted in these chemicals seeping into food items, posing risks to human health.

He emphasised the need to curtail the usage of pesticides to safeguard public health and called for the development of technologies aimed at disease prevention.

Proposing solutions, Dr. Niranjan suggested a reduction in pesticide application and advocated for the adoption of alternative agricultural practices. He cited ongoing research efforts worldwide and urged India to prioritise initiatives aimed at minimising the use of disease-inducing pesticides in food production and increasing dependency on crops that are known to have the ability to fight diseases.

“The escalating reliance on crops renowned for their disease-fighting properties underscores a growing recognition of the pivotal role that nutrition plays in preventive healthcare,” Dr. Niranjan said.

As individuals become increasingly conscious of the link between diet and health, there has been a notable shift towards incorporating immune-boosting foods into daily consumption habits, he opined.

Suyog Hospital Chairman Dr. S.P. Yoganna echoed Dr. Niranjan’s concerns and emphasised the holistic definition of health by the World Health Organisation. He stressed the importance of lifestyle factors such as balanced nutrition, physical activity and stress management in maintaining overall well-being.

Retired VC Dr. N.S. Ramegowda said that the ‘World Health Day’ celebrations on Apr. 7 emphasise the theme centred on advocating for health rights. He highlighted the significance of promoting health awareness and fostering a culture of preventive healthcare practices.
