Mysore/Mysuru: Tension prevailed at Karya village in Nanjangud taluk falling under Varuna Assembly Constituency in the district for some time, when Congress workers took objection to BJP candidate V. Somanna inspecting a Polling Booth during the election this morning.
Somanna was walking towards the booth in the village, when irate Congress workers restrained him at a distance, besides raising slogans, asking the former to go back. This infuriated BJP workers, who also raised counter slogans, in support of their candidate.
The Police personnel present at the spot intervened and whisked Somanna to safety, as Varuna Constituency in particular has turned into a high-octane battle, with Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddharamaiah being the Congress candidate.
Somanna said “I have been visiting the booths since morning and this (Karya village) is my 16th booth visit. The law entitles a candidate to visit the polling booth and will give a fitting reply to these incidents, after the election.”
Later, Somanna visited the booth and left in his car, amid sloganeering by his supporters.
Somanna was accompanied by BJP leaders Ka. Pu. Siddalingaswamy (who had previously contested Assembly elections from Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) in Varuna segment in 2008) and his brother and former Zilla Panchayat President Ka. Pu. Siddaveerappa and others during the visit.
