Conman poses as Cop, marries woman

July 29, 2017

Mysuru: While incidents of conmen posing as wealthy individuals and cheating gullible women in the name of marrying them has become common, here is a man who posed as a Police Constable to cheat a lady. He succeeded in marrying her but the fact that he was not a Police Constable did not remain under wraps for long and he has now been arrested by the Mysuru Rural Police.

The conman has been identified as 25-year-old Shivamurthy, a resident of Mavinahalli village on the city outskirts. He managed to convince a woman from Bogadi a year ago that he was a Constable from District Armed Reserve (DAR) and succeeded in marrying her.

After some months, the woman grew suspicious about Shivamurthy’s profession and later she discovered that he was not a Cop but a conman. The woman easily fell into the trap as Shivamurthy was to dress up like a  Police Constable and even had identity cards and photographs to prove his claims.

At the time of marriage, he kept a demand of Rs. 1 lakh cash and 260 gram gold ornaments. Accordingly, he was given the cash and gold as dowry and there was no way that the lady could doubt him as he was confident and convincing in his speech.

After marriage too, he left the house daily with uniform, complete with a Police belt and a name-badge. When his wife raised suspicion about his job, Shivamurthy clicked some photographs of him with a Police jeep.

Through his dealings, Shivamurthy had managed to borrow crores of rupees as loans and was under the impression that, as he convinced people that he was a Police Constable, money lenders would not trouble him. His luck, however, ran out when people came to his house demanding that he pay back their money.

After some time, Shivamurthy absconded from his house and his wife had to bear the brunt of people who lent money. She contacted DAR and learnt that her husband was not a Constable and she and her family had been taken on a royal ride. She lodged a complaint with the Mysuru Rural Police who have arrested Shivamurthy.
