Dasara Yuva Kavi Goshti: MeToo campaign gets a poetic touch

Mysuru: The second day of Dasara Kavi Goshti featuring young poets at Rani Bahadur Auditorium in Manasagangotri here yesterday drew the attention of all literary lovers when contemporary issues like MeToo campaign and Swachh Bharat campaign were conveyed through poems.

Bengaluru Doordarshana Centre Assistant Director Nirmala C. Eligara, participating in the event as a Poetess, recalled that travelling from Bengaluru to Mysuru on an Airavata Bus, she browsed through a newspaper which carried a lot of news on MeToo campaign. She scribbled a poem ‘Me too, me too, andre nanagoo saha heege agittu…canteennalli, campausnalli, institutenalli…’ and recited at the Kavi Goshti.

Dr. Reshma Ramesh, a Dentist from Bengaluru recited a poem on a sarcastic note ‘Dayavittu illi mootra visarjane maadabedi’ striking on the importance of cleanliness.

Similarly, other poets recited thought provoking poems. The one by Poetess K. Sharifa who presided over the programme touched everybody’s heart. In the poem a baby pigeon asks its mother ‘when we pigeons easily fly from mosque to church then to temple why these human beings visit only one place of worship? ’.

The mother pigeon replies ‘We are placed at a higher level compared to humans’ and the message was really intense.

The programme was inaugurated by Journalist Shudra Srinivas. He opined that such programmes would provide a platform for poets to express and share feelings and thoughts.

‘People should develop interest in poetry’

Observing that people from all sections of the society should develop an interest in poetry, said well-known Writer Shudra Srinivas.

He said that poetry is a wonderful thing which helps in maintaining physical and mental health.

He was speaking after inaugurating ‘Yuva Kavi Goshti’ organised as part of Dasara Kavigoshti at Rani Bahadur Auditorium on Hunsur Road in Manasagangotri on Friday.

Recalling his association with renowned Writer and Journalist P. Lankesh, Srinivas said that it was Lankesh who introduced him to great poetry works published from different parts of the world.

Pointing out that it is the essence of our great epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata that has influenced our thoughts and ideas for centuries, he said that the two epics have played a key-role in maintaining the health of our society.

Reiterating the importance of the two great epics, he added that they were so influential that poetries based on them have been regularly coming out in one or the other languages. Complimenting the authorities for organising such as Kavigoshti he said that they have provide a platform for sharing our feelings and thoughts.

Poetess K. Sharifa presided. More than 30 young poets from across the State rendered their poems, which were chiefly based on exploitation of women, human values and motherly affection and other such issues.

The Dasara Kavigoshti will conclude on Oct.15. University of Mysore(UoM) Registrar Prof. R. Rajanna, who is also Special Dasara Deputy Officer, Prasaranga Director Prof. M.G. Manjunath, who is also Dasara Kavigoshti Sub-Committee Working  President, Secretary M.S. Mariswamygowda and others were present.
