Announces installation of pollution monitoring unit at Makkaji Chowk

Stressing on the need for protecting our nature, DC D. Randeep has called upon all schools to contribute their mite in saving the environment.

He was speaking after inaugurating ‘Parisara Mitra’ School Awards (2016-17) presentation programme organised jointly by Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of Public Instruction and Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat, Mysuru, at Cauvery auditorium, KSOU campus, on Hunsur Road here yesterday.

Underlining the need for rain water harvesting and such other methods for saving water, D. Randeep said that such measures will largely help in increasing the ground water level.

Emphasising on the need for judicious use of water, he reiterated the importance of rain harvesting as this will hugely help in mitigating domestic water woes.

Expressing concern over air pollution levels across the country, the DC said that it was the responsibility of everyone to ensure that Mysuru maintains standard oxygen levels and remains pollution free in the present and as well as in next decades.

Announcing that an air pollution monitoring unit will be installed at Makkaji Chowk in the heart of the city, the DC asked Mysureans to contribute their bit for saving scarce water and pleasant environment.

Senior KSPCB Officer K.M. Lingaraju, in his address, said that more than 400 schools form across the district were trained on green environment for over four months, out of which 219 schools actively took part in the initiative. A KSPCB team, which inspected these 219 schools, selected 21 schools for the award (2016-17).

ZP Deputy Secretary Shivakumaraswamy released a book titled ‘Kanasu Nanasu’ on the occasion. The book contains details of all the 21 Schools which bagged the award.

Government Lower Primary School at Manchegowdanahalli, a tribal hamlet in H.D. Kote taluk, bagged the first place. The school was presented a trophy and Rs. 30,000 cash prize.

Ten schools, which came second, were given ‘Green School Award’ which carried a citation and Rs. 5,000 cash, while the 10 remaining schools, which came third, were given ‘Yellow School Award’ which carried a citation and Rs. 4,000 cash.

DDPI H.R. Basappa, former CSRTI scientist Dr. T. Thippeswamy, KSPCB Officers M.G. Yatish and M.G. Raghuram and others were present.
