Mysore/Mysuru: The Mysore Centre of Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India) in association with Department of Civil Engineering, Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), JSS Science and Technology University (JSS STU), Mysuru, organised the Annual Design SAFE Colloquium on ‘Why Structures Fail’ recently at IS Seminar Hall, SJCE.
‘Design SAFE’ serves as a premier academia-industry interaction platform for M.Tech. students specialising in Structural Engineering and Construction Technology & Management.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. S.A. Dhanaraj, Registrar, JSS STU, in the presence of Dr. C. Nataraju, Principal (I/C), SJCE and Dean – Engineering & Technology; Er. S.B. Basavaraj, Er. C.S. Srikanth, Dr. B.S. Keerthi Gowda, Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of ACCE(I), Mysore and Dr. R Satish, Head, Department of Civil Engineering, SJCE, JSS STU.
Eminent structural engineering professionals from Bengaluru, Er. S. Chandramouleeswar and Er. B.V. Nagesh of Nagesh Consultants, delivered technical presentations.
A technical quiz competition was conducted and top three teams were awarded cash prizes worth Rs. 10,000. The first prize was won by Aabdul Gani and Syed Saad Mustafa (VVCE, Mysuru), second by B.M. Manoj and A.G. Vinayaka (VTU Mysuru Region) and third by Saif Khan and C. Shashank (JSS STU, Mysuru).

On the occasion, M.Tech Theses awards were presented to the winning students who had submitted their theses. Dr. K.C. Manjunath, Principal, NIE, Dr. P. Nanjundaswamy, Controller of Examinations, JSS STU, Dr. G.S. Suresh, Chairman (Awards Committee), Er. S.B. Basavaraj, Er. C.S. Srikanth, Dr. B.S. Keerthi Gowda, Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of ACCE(I) Mysore Centre and Dr. R. Satish, HoD of Civil Engineering, SJCE, JSS STU were present.
The M.Tech theses, submitted by students, were evaluated by an expert jury comprising Dr. S. Raghunath, Professor (Retd.), BMS College of Engineering, Bengaluru and Dr. K.V. Vijayendra, Professor, Atria College of Engineering, Bengaluru.
A total cash prize of Rs. 10,000 was awarded to top three theses. S. Sharanya from NIE won first prize (Rs.5,000) for her research, “Structural Performance Evaluation of NSM GFRP Strengthened Concrete Beams: A Numerical Approach,” supervised by Dr. N.C. Balaji.
G.M. Madhushree from JSS STU took second prize (Rs. 3,000) for “Sustainable Concrete Using Bottom Ash as Partial Replacement of Fine Aggregate,” guided by Dr. M.C. Nataraja.
Third prize (Rs.2,000) went to Amogh P. Haveri from NIE for “Zeolite-Modified Concrete Under Elevated Temperatures,” under the guidance of Dr. N.R. Vadiraj Rao. Around 70 M.Tech students from Mysuru, Mandya and Hassan regions participated.
