Distance education empowering all sections of society: Governor

June 21, 2026

Mysuru: Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has opined that distant education is empowering all sections of the society including women by providing quality higher education.

The Governor was speaking at the Academic Meet on ‘From Access to Excellence: The Future Pathways of Distance Education” and the Book Release Ceremony of ‘Education: An Overview of Formal, Open and Distance Learning,’ organised by Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), Mysuru, at KSOU Convocation Hall in city on Saturday.

He noted that the education sector is witnessing unprecedented transformation driven by technology, digital resources and innovative teaching methods. These developments have made education more accessible, inclusive and effective. Open and distance learning systems, he said, have opened the doors of knowledge to millions of learners who are unable to access conventional educational institutions due to social, economic or geographical constraints.

“Distant education will play a major role in implementing the concept of Viksit Bharat-2047. In future, distance education  won’t be limited to mere higher education. It will be disseminating knowledge about Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Network and other latest facets of modern education,” added the Governor.

Highlighting the role of distance education in women’s empowerment, the Governor said that many women are unable to pursue regular education because of family responsibilities. Distance education enables them to continue their studies from home and become self-reliant. He added that such systems also provide valuable opportunities for persons with disabilities and socially disadvantaged sections, thereby contributing to inclusive growth.

Former Dean Prof. Chambi Puranik spoke about the book.
