Dr.(Capt.) K. Thimmappiah Memorial Cricket Tournament: Bumrah shines as Gujarat take control

August 4, 2017

An excellent spell of fast bowling by pacer Jasprit Bumrah (four for 25) and ably assisted by Chintan Gaja (two for 36) and Aashav Panchal (two for 15), helped Gujarat CA to skittle out Punjab CA for a paltry 100 in 36.3 overs in their first innings and in reply had scored 137 for one in 50 overs at end of Day-1 to take control of the proceedings in their Group ‘B’ tie in the Dr.(Capt.) K. Thimmappiah Memorial Tournament, conducted by KSCA at the JSS-SJCE grounds yesterday.

Batting first after winning the toss, Punjab got off to a bad start and were reeling at 27 for five. Opener Manan Vohra (16) offered some resistance initially, but Gujarat’s bowlers headed by Bumrah and supported well by Chintan Gaja and Aashrav Panchal struck in tandem to put them in deep trouble. Mayank Markhande (24), Nikhil Choudhary (20) and Suber Gill (17) were the only batsman to offer some resistance. The last wicket pair of Mayank Markhande and Suber Gill added 30 runs in their team’s score of 100  in 36.3 overs.

At close of play, Gujarat had scored 137 for one in 50 overs. Opener Samit Gohil (68 n.o, 7x4s) and Kathan Patel 26 (3x4s) gave them a decent start by adding 47-runs for the opening wicket. The second wicket unfinished partnership between Samit Gohil (68 n.o.) and Rahul Shah 34 n.o (4x4s) is worth 90-runs.

The scores: Punjab CA 100 in 36.3 overs (Mayank Markhande 24, Nikhil Choudhary 20, Jasprit Bumrah four for 25, Aashav Panchal two for 15, Chintan Gaja two for 36) Vs Gujarat CA 137 for one in 50 overs (Samit Gohil 68 n.o., Rahul Shah 34 n.o., Kathan Patel 26).
