Dr. K. Krishnamurthy Centenary Celebrations at Bengaluru on Aug. 1

Mysore/Mysuru: Karnataka Sanskrit University, Bengaluru and Dr. K. Krishnamurthy Centenary Committee, Mysuru, have jointly organised Dr. K. Krishnamurthy Centenary Celebrations at the Karnataka Sanskrit University premises in Bengaluru on Aug. 1 at 11 am.

Bangalore North University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Niranjan Vanalli will inaugurate the event. Karnataka Sanskrit University VC Dr. S. Ahalya will preside.

Scholar Shatavadhani Dr. R. Ganesh will be the main speaker. Retired VC Prof. Mallepuram G. Venkatesh will address the gathering. Dr. K. Krishnamurthy Research Foundation Founder-Director Dr. K. Leela Prakash will deliver the introductory speech.

Karnataka State Sanskrit Patashala Teachers Association and Karnataka Sanskrit Colleges Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff Association have extended their support to the event.

PROFILE: Born in 1923 in Keralapura, a small village in Karnataka, Krishnamurthy had a brilliant academic career at the University of Mysore and won prizes and gold medals for Sanskrit, English and Kannada. He was the first person to secure a Doctorate in Sanskrit in Mysore. This was at a time when Mysore housed a host of stalwarts in Sanskrit and Mysore University had attained worldwide reputation. From 1959 to 1984, he served as Professor and Head of the Department of Sanskrit in the Karnatak University, Dharwad.

The critical editions of Vakroktijivita, Dhvanyaloka and Natyashastra with Abhinava Bharati brought him international reputation. He also brought out some volumes of his independent studies: Some Thoughts on Indian Aesthetics, Essays in Sanskrit Criticism, Studies in Indian Aesthetics and Criticism, and Indian Literary Theories – A Reappraisal.  Naturally, many awards and honours followed, the most significant of them being the President’s Certificate of Honour (1978).

He has also published a Critical Inventory on Ramayana Studies.
