‘Effective communication skills key to good leadership’

October 21, 2018

Mysuru:  A workshop on ‘Enhancing Communication at Workplace’ was conducted at Administrative Training Institute (ATI) in city recently. A.J. Srivali, Course Coordinator, ATI, welcomed a group of 38 officers from different department.

At the workshop, Dr N.N.Prahallada, former faculty of  Regional Institute of Education (RIE) said that effective  communication at work place is imperative in a leadership role.

He addressed officers from departments of Treasury, Animal Husbandry, Social Welfare, Commercial Tax and Insurance Department.

Good communication is what separates a poor leader from an exceptional one. When the leader communicates well with the team, it eliminates misunderstanding and encourages  a healthy and peaceful work environment. For most jobs, communication skill is are important. It is hard to work as a team if people are not communicating well, he opined.

Prahallada said: Team stands for ‘Together Everybody Accomplishes More’. In the context of effective communication, here  are some questions that needs to be answered. How do you build a healthy rapport with co-workers? Do you prefer written or verbal communication? What would you do if you misunderstood an important piece of communication  on the job? How do you work under someone who is not an effective communicator?

Motivation plays an important role in co-workers’ productivity and performance. Good communication skills, if practiced   consistently, can go a long way in improving productivity and performance.

Timely and transparent dialogues, positive and receptive atmosphere, communication that characterises confidence, use of simple language, humour and visuals, effective listening skills, positive body language and an appropriate tone is important, he said.
