Mandya: An elderly woman, who had been living by begging for several years, died of age-related illness. However, more than Rs. 8 lakh in cash was found at her house in a surprising discovery.

The deceased has been identified as Noor, a resident of Guttalu Layout in Mandya. She died yesterday, following which her relatives and local residents performed her last rites.

After the cremation, when people entered Noor’s house, they were shocked to find bundles of currency notes and gunny sacks filled with coins. On counting the cash, the amount was found to be more than Rs. 8 lakh.

Noor had no family support and had been earning her livelihood by begging in different parts of the city for several years. Despite leading a modest life, she had quietly saved a substantial amount of money.

Later, local leaders held discussions and decided to hand over the recovered cash to Noor’s relatives. The incident comes under the jurisdiction of Mandya East Police Station. Police have taken up an inquiry into the matter.
