Empowering women and fostering gender equality

March 24, 2024

Mysore/Mysuru: Embracing the theme of ‘Inspire and Inclusion’ for the 2024 International Women’s Day, JSS College for Women, Saraswathipuram, Mysuru, took a significant step towards empowering women and fostering gender equality.

Dr. Vidya Narayan, Head of the Post-Graduation Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at JSS Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital, delivered a lecture, highlighting the crucial role women play in balancing their lives akin to a pot of oil, where not a drop should be spilt.

Organised by the Internal Quality and Assessment Cell and Prevention of Sexual Harassment Cell of the college, the event featured enlightening technical sessions led by Dr. Vidya Narayan and Dr. K.O. Nanda, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital.

Dr. Vidya Narayan shed light on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) at the workplace, emphasising the importance of awareness, prevention mechanisms and redressal procedures. She delved into the landmark Vishaka Vs State of Rajasthan case of 1997, which catalysed the formulation of protective legislation for women.

Dr. Nanda’s session underscored the imperative of investing in women to accelerate progress and achieve gender equality through economic empowerment. Drawing from Ayurvedic principles, she addressed various life stages of women and offered valuable insights into health issues faced by young women. She advocated for cervical cancer immunisation and emphasised the importance of informed choices in pregnancy.

Principal Dr. M. Poornima echoed the theme’s significance, emphasising its relevance beyond women to encompass humanity and Mother Earth. She stressed the importance of inclusion, particularly for marginalised women, in achieving societal justice.

The event, graced by Dr. Rechanna, honoured women security and housekeeping staff, recognising their invaluable contributions to the college community.
