Sir,
Being myself an environmentalist, I am tempted to appreciate your Editorial titled ‘From Despair To Hope’ which made an excellent read (SOM dated Apr.25). As an ardent reader of Star of Mysore, perhaps since its ‘birth,’ it is my observation that your Editorials are always topical and good.
I had participated in public campaigns like ‘Prevent Silent Valley Project,’ ‘Save Western Ghat Movement’ and nearer home, ‘Save Kukkarahalli Lake,’ ‘Lingambudhi Lake,’ ‘Make Mysore free from plastic menace’ etc. Like me many others also did evince interest in such drives.
We formed ‘Mysore Environment Trust,’ the pioneer being our friend, retired ISRO Scientist Prof. V. Jagannath. My friend late Prof. K.M. Veerappa and myself mustered all passable support to save the giant banyan tree near the Railway Gate in the vicinity of Crawford Hall. It is still very much there offering shelter to thousands of birds and providing shade to fruit vendors.
Singapore, where I sojourned for a year, is a city splendidly pollution-free. I have observed the kids, even at nursery stage, are taught not to spit on the road, throw used tissue paper, plantain skin, not to pass urine anywhere and everywhere they like. This is where we have failed as parents.
