Existence of Vachana is in theatre: Prof. Rajappa Dalavayi

March 10, 2024

Mysore/Mysuru: Prof. Rajappa Dalavayi from Bangalore University observed that “The existence of Vachana literature can be further preserved and nurtured only if we practice it in our life.”

Sharing his views at a lecture on the topic ‘Vachana Movement and Kannada Theatre’ organised during a national symposium, as part of Bahuroopi National Theatre Festival at Rangayana, Dalavayi said “We should understand the value of Vachana movement that has a larger influence on Kannada theatre.”

“The solution to social imbalance lies in Vachana movement. In the initial days, Vachanas were considered as religious scripts and it was only after 70s that they transformed into a movement. Vachana literature was adapted to theatre later,” he added.

Former Rangayana Director C. Basavalingaiah said “There is a difference between movement and activity. Any development begins with a movement and ends up with activity. There are over 60 Kannada plays dependent on Vachanas which took the form of a movement through dialogues.”

For the last two years, Rangayana was filled with Police and a party oriented event more than theatre enthusiasts. Now, the real theatre lovers are turning towards Rangayana and such activities should continue in the coming days too, he said.

Playwright Nataraj Honnavalli and theatre director Mahadev Hadapada were present.
