Expert team visits KRS Dam, oversees restoration works

Mysuru: An expert team comprising a representative from the World Bank, Central Water Commission and State Planning Supervisory Committee visited the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) Dam on Wednesday for an inspection of the ongoing repair and  restoration works.

The team was led by Edward Flint of the World Bank and it inspected the first phase of renovation taken up at KRS. The team had discussions with Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited officials on the second phase of works, which will begin shortly. The team members obtained information on the condition of the sluice gates of the dam and directed the officials to complete the remaining works before the inflow begins.

Flint expressed satisfaction over the quality of works. Shiva Prasad, member of State Planning Supervisory Committee, said that the renovation of two more dams in the State are on the anvil and will be taken up soon.

The renovation works began  at KRS in July 2016 with an estimated cost of Rs. 36 crore and is scheduled to end in July 2018. World Bank is funding the project up to 90 percent and the remaining 10 percent is funded by the State Government.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has approved the project and the dam restoration has been handed over to Ferro Concrete Construction (India), Bhagirathapur in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

The CWC has appointed Water Resource Development Organisation (WRDO) as a nodal agency to supervise and implement the project.

The team later visited Harangi and Kabini reservoirs and returned to Bengaluru. Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited Superintending Engineer K.G. Vijaykumar, Assistant Executive Engineer C. Vasudev and Assistant Engineer Kishore Kumar accompanied the team and briefed it.
